Travis Unified board approves site plans after review of student outcomes

Joe, district presenter, told the board the district saw improvement on most measures in the 2025 data set. "Of the 7 indicators for which TUSD received a color showing achievement and improvement, we improved in 5 of the 7 indicators, decreased in 1, and stayed flat," he said during a presentation on the Single Plan for Student Achievement and its alignment with the district LCAP.

The presentation traced work by site councils and principals from fall data disaggregation through work sessions and finalization of strategies and costs. Joe highlighted a renewed emphasis on literacy this year, local "site leadership action plans" (nicknamed SLAP), and a DoDEA grant the district is in year two of — a five-year award totaling $2,000,000 — that staff said helps fund strategies to improve student belonging and connectedness.

Board members asked whether gains were concentrated in academics, social-emotional programs or parent engagement. Joe said the improvements were spread across academic, social-emotional and parent-engagement goals and identified chronic absenteeism as the single indicator that declined this cycle. When asked to clarify chronic absenteeism, he said it is measured by the share of students absent 10% (about 18 days) or more of school days.

After questions, the board moved and voted to adopt the plans Joe presented. Chair (speaker 3) called for a motion; a motion and second were received and the board voted in favor. The board and staff said the plans will guide alignment of goals, metrics and related costs.

The board asked staff to track follow-up data — including measures tied to literacy emphasis and chronic absenteeism — and to return with any recommended adjustments as the year progresses.
