Border health event set for July with dental and veterinary services for children, organizers tell Starr County court

Organizers told Starr County commissioners April 27 they plan a three-day border health preparedness event July 21–23 that will offer dental and veterinary services for children and provide referral vouchers for follow-up care.
Lupica Gutierrez (introduced on the record by the judge) said the event will include dental services and veterinary services for children aged 6 months through high school and will be held at rotating sites including Oliver, John and Oliver Elementary in La Casita for the coming year. Gutierrez said Remote Area Medical would provide services and that organizers are coordinating with local school districts and community partners to reach residents. She noted the event was reduced from five days to three this year because of circumstances and planned to use word-of-mouth outreach and school contacts to bring people in.
Gutierrez said organizers had previously provided smaller-scale services and referrals and that last year a smaller effort reached about 200 families. Commissioners thanked organizers and indicated they would help publicize the event.
