Katy ISD board approves instructional materials and the superintendent's evaluation; denies Level 3 grievance

Following a closed session, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees took several formal votes during its April 20 meeting.
On the superintendent's annual evaluation (agenda item 7.1), a motion to approve the evaluation was moved and seconded; a board member clarified that the vote covered only the evaluation and not the superintendent's contract. The motion passed 4'to'3.
During the consent portion of the meeting trustees removed item 9.3 for separate consideration; the remainder of the consent agenda (items 9.1 through 9.7, excluding 9.3) passed 7'to'0.
Item 9.3, "Consider Board approval of the new instructional materials and the Certification of Provision of Instructional Materials for the 2026'27 school year," was discussed separately. Trustee Champagne and others asked for cost comparisons between the leading candidates. District staff said the selected resource was "considerably less expensive by almost ... close to $1,000,000" and that adopting the Savas K12 package triggers an annual 15% discount; staff indicated the $1,000,000 figure influenced but did not solely determine the choice. The board approved the instructional-materials certification 7'to'0.
The board also addressed a Level 3 F and G grievance (parent/student grievance matter) heard in closed session. A motion to grant relief (allowing the students to finish the year under specified relief) lacked a second; the board instead voted to uphold the Level 2 decision while allowing the students to finish the school year. The motion passed 6'to'0.
The meeting adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
