East Porter County board hears Applied Skills transition update and classroom readiness plans

The district has selected the Unique curriculum for the program and reported staffing and classroom design are largely complete. Officials said they have purchased touch‑screen tablets and electric lift changing tables and are finalizing classroom layouts. Family communication is underway; the district plans a May 12 visit to Washington Township for middle/high students identified to move into the program.
Administrators said four families elected to keep their students at current placements, while the district plans to welcome eight middle/high students and six elementary students into the Applied Skills program. Special‑education transition supports — including social stories and family tours scheduled closer to start dates — will be provided for younger students.
Teachers, principals and parents have been engaged in classroom design and case conferences, and procurement of classroom materials is in progress. The administration said classroom visits and additional training will continue as the district prepares for the program rollout.
What’s next: The administration will continue finalizing staffing, classroom setup and transition plans and will return to the board with any outstanding scheduling or funding items.
