Mission Economic Development Corporation reported a $4 million expansion by Stanley Black & Decker adding 88 jobs, launched a six‑week paid internship pilot with 15 employer partners and highlighted the Ruby Ventures pitch competition and other small‑business assistance programs.
Mission Economic Development Corporation officials briefed the City Council on April 28 about recent wins and programs aimed at growing jobs and supporting small businesses in Mission.
The EDC reported that Stanley Black & Decker is investing about $4 million in an expansion that will add 88 jobs and retain roughly 150 positions. "They're adding 88 new jobs…their $4,000,000 expansion is really they're adding a new manufacturing line," the EDC representative said.
EDC staff also described a six‑week paid internship pilot involving 15 local small‑business partners; the program received more than 130 student applications and officials said demand will require expanding the program next year. The Ruby Ventures pitch competition was described as a 14‑week small‑business development program that whittles dozens of applicants down to finalists for three financial awards.
Small business owners who participated thanked the city and EDC for grants and permits. "The economic grant…really opened up doors for us," Carlos Solis of Psychotherapy Bike Shop said. Dr. Maria Palomo of Consuelo Behavioral Health Services said the Ruby Red Ventures grant helped with marketing and accessibility for mental‑health services. Kenya Monin, owner of Mr. Corn Gourmet, thanked the city for permitting a drive‑through that increased her business.
EDC leaders said they continue outreach at trade shows and are working on multiple potential deals. They emphasized that the EDC is actively recruiting employers and supporting startups through programs such as downtown assistance, the Build Mission Fund and Mission Ready internships.
