Several public speakers used the district’s oral communications period to press the board on teacher compensation, staff retention and student safety.
Carlos Antwanter, president of the Torrance Teachers Association, thanked the board for its work on the tentative agreement but warned that educators are "burning out in underfunded and understaffed classrooms." He urged that the successor contract negotiations focus resources on campuses and classroom staff rather than on central administrative priorities.
Terry Boris, a long‑time teacher in the district, described personal financial strain and said Torrance has become a district where many employees cannot afford to live locally. "Our salaries simply are not keeping pace," Boris said, explaining that rising costs and insurance changes have reduced take‑home pay for many veteran teachers.
Parent Tasha Padilla Barrios described repeated behavioral incidents at Yukon Elementary that she says have harmed her fourth‑grade daughter’s sense of safety and learning. She asked the district for a clear review of the discipline matrix, immediate protective measures for affected students and timely, transparent communication with parents.
Board members acknowledged the public comments and thanked speakers for raising concerns. The meeting record shows no immediate case‑specific actions taken at the public meeting; trustees indicated those matters would be handled through district administrative channels and negotiations reflected some attention to compensation in the approved tentative agreement.
