Several councilmembers used the general session to promote neighborhood cleanups, volunteer events and community meetings, and to call attention to recent shootings in parts of the city.
Councilmember Laura Liedres described the history of Crumley Park and the donation that allowed Denver Urban Gardens to create a community garden there; she said the site will be named for a volunteer, and that donated work removed old gas-station tanks. Councilmember Amanda Sawyer announced Give 5 Mile High and a District 5 cleanup at Montclair Rec Center on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Councilmember Chris Hines described an upcoming community benefits fund for District 10 and other outreach efforts.
Councilor Daryl Watson said the city has experienced "7 shootings across the city" recently, with multiple fatalities in District 9. He invited residents to a public safety dialogue on Thursday, April 16 at 6 p.m. at Saint Charles Recreation Center and expressed condolences for the families of victims. Councilmember Amanda Sandoval announced La Raza Park will open May 1 in time for Cinco de Mayo and promoted a Chicano Pride Ride on May 2.
The announcements were informational; the general session recorded no binding council actions connected to the cleanups, park opening or the public safety dialogue. Residents were directed to the city website and council social channels for sign-ups and further details.
