Commission authorizes plaque marking childhood Milwaukee home site of Malcolm X

The Historic Preservation Commission voted to authorize a historic‑site plaque on the Walnut Street Overpass acknowledging the location of a childhood home of Malcolm X (application 251706). Staff presented archival context and draft plaque language, and the commission approved placing the plaque at a WestDOT‑approved viewing location that provides a sightline to the former house site.

A staff member summarized the historical findings: "Malcolm X is an icon of civil rights and black self empowerment," and noted the family moved to Milwaukee in December 1926 and lived at 1012 West Galena Street where a younger sibling, Reginald, was born. Staff explained that the original house and many neighborhood properties were demolished in the 1950s–60s during Hillside redevelopment and the construction of Interstate 43, and that the exact front‑vs‑rear house location is unclear but the overpass site affords a view of the former footprint.

Commissioners reviewed draft language and graphic mockups; staff said the design and text were not final but that council graphic‑design resources were available to refine formatting. A commissioner moved to authorize the plaque; another seconded, and the motion carried by voice vote.

The plaque authorization does not by itself fund installation; staff noted the draft design currently exceeds the project budget and will be finalized before installation. The commission recorded application 251706 and will proceed with final text, graphic design input from council staff and coordination with WestDOT on install location and budget.
