Calendar committee proposes post‑Labor Day 2027–28 option after wide stakeholder survey

Travis Olsen, the district’s director of teaching and learning, briefed the school board on the calendar committee’s work, which included teachers, principals and administrators, and told the board the committee gathered about 2,500 survey responses from students, families and staff to inform two candidate calendars for 2026–27 and 2027–28.
Olsen said the committee balanced five primary inputs: state statute on required contact days and hours, the teacher contract cycle, historical district practices, survey results and the impacts of inclement weather. He described the 2027–28 calendars as returning to a more traditional structure, with a start after Labor Day and spring breaks of three or more days in both calendar options under consideration.
On student voice, a student representative asked how the calendars account for university schedules used by PSEO students; Olsen said alignment is limited because the district’s contact‑day requirements and college calendars rarely match. He also explained why the district does not plan to move graduation off the traditional day this year, noting conflicts in potential alternate dates.
Board members discussed tradeoffs — whether to end the school year before or after Memorial Day, placement of conference days, and the district’s ability to be flexible because many buildings now have air conditioning. Olsen said the calendars will be posted for public comment through Dec. 14 and that the committee will review feedback and return recommendations to the board for action Jan. 5.
