The sheriff told the council the state board of accounts advised that checks not cashed by released inmates should be written off every two years; the outstanding items accounted for $2,314.31. He said many of the checks are for nominal amounts (most under $4) and that the county has moved to issuing debit cards to released inmates, reducing future occurrences. “They told us we're supposed to write them off every two years,” the sheriff said.
Council members moved and seconded a motion to approve the write‑off and the motion passed by voice vote. The sheriff said the write‑off, when executed, would return the funds to the general fund per accounting practice and staff will follow up with any items that require additional review.
