Greene County approves higher pay for part‑time dispatchers to fill vacancies

The Greene County Council voted to increase part‑time dispatcher pay to $20 per hour for the sheriff’s dispatch position to help recruit and retain certified dispatchers.
Sheriff (speaker 1) told the council the department has had trouble filling dispatch and deputy positions and proposed paying $20 an hour for part‑time dispatchers rather than the $15 currently used. “We normally are at $15, and that’s not quite enough for the dispatch position… I need to increase it or I won't get anybody anymore,” the sheriff said. He told the council there is appropriated part‑time money available and that the change would be targeted to the dispatcher role; other part‑time positions (for example, jailers) would remain at their existing rates.
Council members asked whether a new budget line should be created and whether the department could cover the $20/hour rate from current appropriations; the sheriff said the funds exist and that the 2027 budget could formalize a separate line item for dispatch wages. The council moved, seconded and approved the pay increase for the dispatch position.
The sheriff also outlined using part‑time certified dispatchers to reduce overtime and improve shift coverage; he said some potentially qualified former employees remain on the department’s books and could be made available for limited hours.
