Alachua County commissioners directed staff on Jan. 27 to begin a formal Plan Development (PD) amendment for the Weisman and Ecoloop properties that would remove a fairgrounds reverter clause and broaden allowable industrial uses on the county's land.
Staff said the Ecoloop development concept (originally focused on waste-related uses) has not attracted tenants and recommended opening the PD to a wider set of heavy-industrial land uses while preserving the county's right to approve individual proposals. Missy Daniels, county manager's office, told the board that staff will start with a required neighborhood workshop per code, collect resident input and return with a draft PD that could be narrowed to exclude specific uses if needed.
Commissioners emphasized the need for neighborhood input and for guardrails to protect adjacent communities; the board unanimously approved the motion to proceed with outreach and the PD process.
