Board approves Raider summer day camp to continue this year, asks staff to ensure costs covered

The Lake Park Audubon School District board voted to continue the Raiders summer day camp this year while charging staff and a newly formed committee to quickly assess costs, staffing and possible fee adjustments.

Board members raised concerns that the district historically lost money on the program and that staffing shortages — including reduced busing — had previously affected operations. One board member asked whether parents had already applied; administrators confirmed applications were already posted and some families had signed up.

“I’m gonna make a motion to pass the Raider summer day camp,” a board member said before a second and a board discussion about finances and supervision. Several members emphasized the district must at minimum cover direct costs and avoid incurring additional deficits in community education funds.

Administrators said the program has run with volunteer helpers and returning college students in prior years and that the district could explore partnerships (community sponsors, college early‑childhood programs, Boys & Girls Club) to provide staffing without a district subsidy. They also discussed whether running four or five days per week would affect revenue recovery.

The motion to continue the camp passed by voice vote. The board asked staff to notify families that the program will run, that a fee adjustment may be necessary to cover costs, and to form a committee to finalize staffing, safety and pricing details before the summer season begins.
