The Community and Economic Development Committee confirmed Mary Reid as the director of the newly created Department of Compliance and Engagement, a post she has been serving in on an interim basis.
Reid said the department evolved from the Office of Equity and Inclusion following council action and that core functions — contract compliance, small‑business certification, ADA compliance and staffing the Equal Rights Commission — will continue. "We did some introspection, and we found that although equity is a great part of what we do, more so is compliance and engagement," Reid said.
Committee members asked how the office will respond when city initiatives risk disproportionate impacts on historically underserved residents. Reid said autonomy for the position is important and that she works closely with the legislative reference bureau and city attorney to ensure federal compliance while raising equity concerns internally. She acknowledged a recent equity impact request she handled took several months and told the committee she will prioritize timelier responses.
Amber Daniels, mayor's council liaison, introduced Reid and noted the mayor's support. Council members praised Reid's responsiveness and said they expect the new department to formalize an equity impact process and return with specifics on timetables and procedures.
The committee approved Reid's confirmation by voice vote.
