Tipton staff report progress on road, Hazel and public-safety projects; fire department raises gear and training needs

Summary
City staff told the Board of Public Safety that E Street and a stormwater project are nearing final asphalt, Hazel Project utilities are connected, and the Public Safety Building is close to punch-list completion. Fire department updates included Engine 10 returning to service, recent training, and discussion of grants and the need for additional turnout gear.
City staff updated the Board of Public Safety on multiple capital and department projects, reporting timelines and outstanding tasks and raising equipment and staffing notes for the fire department.
Staff said two construction projects (E Street and a related stormwater project) should move to final asphalt within about two weeks, weather permitting, and that other road work across Tipton will continue until all work is complete, with a general estimate of about 30 days for the road-related work. The Hazel Project was reported as having water and sanitary services connected, with stormwater the next major utility to be installed; staff said contractors will then install helical piers for dugouts and concession areas before bringing in sand-based turf (not synthetic).
On the Public Safety Building, staff said work on the building front and canopy was near completion and that they would work with contractors on a final punch list and closeout items. “Work has now started near completion on the front of that building,” Chair (Speaker 3) said, noting coordination with vendors to satisfy punch-list items.
Fire and power updates included Engine 10 returning to full service, the department being fully staffed with two new hires, recent training in Indianapolis and attendance at community safety events, and ongoing conversations about grants (including Firehouse Subs) to support acquisition of a second set of turnout gear for each firefighter. Staff described cleaning constraints — one washer/dryer set means it can take several days to launder all gear — and said a second set of gear and additional equipment would reduce time out of service.
No formal board actions were taken on these informational items; staff answered clarifying questions from board members about field gates, event admissions and whether new sports fields would be enclosed.
Next steps: staff will continue construction oversight, finalize punch-list items for the Public Safety Building, and pursue grant opportunities and equipment planning for firefighter turnout gear.
