Amy, who presented the nutrition update to the board, said USDA guidance will limit cereal sugar to 6 grams next year and that the district’s current cereal offerings for preschool already meet that standard. "Next year, they're gonna be limiting the amount of sugar that can be in our cereal down to 6 grams," she said, adding that the district’s preschool cereals are already at that level.
Amy said the district is moving to offer a protein option every day next year and is currently piloting increased protein this month with yogurt cups, flatbreads with eggs and breakfast sandwiches. "We are already moving into that direction," she said, noting the district recently served breakfast flatbreads, breakfast grilled‑cheese items and specialty offerings such as a Korean barbecue pork taco during chef visits.
She gave participation snapshots for piloted items (roughly 25–33% participation at elementary/middle sites for some dishes, higher participation in targeted classes) and said menu‑maker surveys for grades 7–12 will be distributed to gather student preferences; K–6 surveys will follow in January. Amy also said the high school nutrition staff are fully staffed after early‑year vacancies and that the department is experimenting with a combi‑oven smoker attachment for select menu items.
Board members thanked Amy for the update; no formal action was taken.
