Akron committee approves plan to resurface courts and convert two courts at Reservoir Park to pickleball

The Parks & Recreation Committee on consent approved an ordinance authorizing the mayor or designee to contract for resurfacing two tennis courts and converting two courts into four pickleball courts at Reservoir Park, declaring an emergency.
Jim Ashley, presenting the project, said it is funded from the 2026 court resurfacing program with $100,000 budgeted. He described the plan: the two north courts will remain tennis with crack filling, repainting and new net posts; the two south courts will be converted into four pickleball courts with new nets, dividing fencing and color-coded surfacing.
Council members thanked staff and asked how the city would address other aging courts such as the Davis Center; Ashley said Davis Center work is identified in the five-year capital budget and may require significantly more funding. A staff member said the city plans community conversations about the future of other courts to keep members informed.
The committee put the resurfacing and conversion ordinance on the consent agenda and voted 'Aye'.
