Kewanee council approves variances, property sale and watermain contract; new officer sworn in

At its Aug. 26 meeting the council approved two zoning variances, a property sale, a watermain contract and other routine items; a new Kewanee police officer was sworn in and the DAR received a proclamation.
The Kewanee City Council approved several routine items on Aug. 26, 2024, including zoning variances, a property sale and a watermain contract, and conducted a ceremonial swearing-in.
Zoning variances: The council approved Bill 24-83, granting a variance for Matt Jenkins of 625 Dewey Ave. to allow an addition exceeding the 35% building coverage limit, and Bill 24-84, granting a variance for Richard Werderman of 420 N Grace Ave. to use fence material not on the approved list. Both votes were 5-0.
Property sale: The council adopted Bill 24-87 authorizing city officials to execute documents necessary to sell excess real estate adjacent to 711 Page St. to a private resident (vote 5-0).
Watermain contract: Council approved Bill 24-88, authorizing the execution of an agreement with Laverdiere Construction Inc. to replace and install a watermain on Lyle Street between South Elm and Main Street (vote 5-0).
Ceremonies and personnel: Matt DeClerq was sworn in as a new officer with the Kewanee Police Department. Mayor Moore read and presented a proclamation commemorating Constitution Week to local Daughters of the American Revolution representatives Betsy Tocha and Pat Hurd.
Other business: Consent agenda items including payroll of $245,534.61 for the pay period ending Aug. 10 and bills totaling $479,294.26 were approved. City staff announced upcoming Hog Days, siren upgrades, and that LRS will take over trash, recycling and landscape pickup with schedule adjustments around the Labor Day holiday.
The council adjourned at 7:52 p.m.
