Commissioner urges formal framework for annexation negotiations to avoid referendums

Commissioner Denny Collins told the Bradley County Commission at its March 10 work session that the Growth Committee should pursue a collaborative pathway with municipalities on annexation issues that specifically addresses fire protection, formal agreements for annexations, and primary roads and bridges, and that includes a commitment not to pursue annexation by referendum.
Collins thanked Chairman Thomas Crye and Commissioner Cindy Slater for their leadership on the Growth Committee and requested that remarks Crye made on March 6 be emailed to all commissioners. Commissioner Milan Blake asked that negotiations include a provision for situations where the municipality and county cannot reach agreement on an annexation request, “specifically regarding annexation by referendum,” as Blake put it during the meeting.
No formal action or vote occurred on annexation policy at the March 10 work session; the Growth Committee has a public hearing scheduled March 13 at 6:00 p.m., according to the commission announcements.
