Katie Calloway criticized the board's leadership and asked trustees to "move James Island Elementary to the top of the list immediately," saying the building's restrooms have not been meaningfully updated since the school opened in 2003 and that extra cleaning provides only temporary relief.
Jamie Meissner, chair of James Island Elementary's SIC, said a deep cleaning provides relief for only about 24 hours and that the school community has concluded the restroom facilities must be renovated. Meissner urged that restroom repairs be added to the district's reallocated priority list and asked for the prioritization list to be made public so families can follow progress.
Superintendent Nita Huggins responded in open session, saying James Island Elementary is included in the district replacement program and that the current program is scheduled for $3,250,000 in improvements. Huggins said the scope includes multiple systems across the site and that specifically $180,000 is identified “toward restrooms.” She said additional systems will be evaluated through a facility condition assessment and that principals have been consulted.
Huggins also said CCSD does not undertake full building modernizations for schools constructed after 2000 and that the district is prioritizing older buildings first; nonetheless, James Island has an identified line item in the current program.
What happens next: The superintendent said staff will evaluate systems through the facility condition assessment and will report back; community leaders requested the district publish the prioritized reallocation list and provide clearer timelines.
