The Weatherford City Council approved minor edits to the city's short-term rental regulations that staff described as clarifications to ensure consistency and compliance.
Scott McDonald, director of development services, told the council the packet contained two small changes: one clarifies insurance or policy naming related to the property (staff indicated the city will ultimately be named on the policy as required) and the second clarifies that a property used longer than 29 days may no longer be classified as a short-term rental unless the operator reports the stay to the comptroller. "If they choose to use the property for longer than 29 days, they can do that, but they must report accordingly to the comptroller," McDonald said.
A council member asked whether there is any maximum length for a stay beyond 29 days; McDonald said there is no maximum and such a tenancy could be a multi-year long-term rental but reporting obligations to the comptroller must be met if the owner previously used it as an STR. Staff recommended approval, the public hearing produced no speakers, a motion was made and seconded, and the council approved the amendments.
Staff said the edits align local application with comptroller reporting expectations and remove an ambiguity about how extended stays are classified for taxation and registration purposes.
