Board approves Camp Jeff, Galileo contracts and Chromebook purchase; trustees discuss device lifecycle

The Jefferson Elementary School District board approved several purchasing and contracting items during its Feb. 11 meeting, including summer programming contracts and a Chromebook procurement for middle schools.
The board approved a contract with the Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula to operate Camp Jeff at multiple elementary sites for an amount not to exceed $385,425, to be funded by the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP). Jennifer Larocque, the district’s program director for expanded learning (referenced during the meeting), was recognized for designing the program.
Trustees also approved a Galileo Learning contract for middle-school Camp Jeff programming not to exceed $325,550, also funded by ELOP.
On technology, the administration recommended a Chromebook purchase for all middle schools. Staff reported the originally listed model was unavailable and the district pivoted to a comparable product, reducing the total price to $294,961.63 and creating an approximate $20,000 savings. Tony Barone, the district’s director of technology and curriculum integration, explained the district maintains a technology reserve to support device lifecycles and that many elementary-grade devices remain in classrooms or carts; in middle school the district continues a 1:1 model with controlled checkout policies.
All motions for these items were moved and seconded during the meeting and passed. Funding sources, where noted by staff, included ELOP and the district’s technology budget.
