Bradley County approves $200,000 opioid-abatement grant package, finance committee recommendations recorded

The Bradley County Commission on Dec. 16 voted unanimously to approve the Finance Committee's recommendations for distribution of opioid-abatement funds, accepting a package of awards that totals $200,000.
Finance Committee records show six proposals were submitted with a combined request of $331,900.50. After discussion, the committee recommended funding five projects and excluding one (the Dream Center) from the award package in this funding cycle. The commission then voted to adopt the committee’s recommendation.
The approved awards recorded in the Finance Committee attachment are: ATS The Bridge — $60,000 to support drug-education and student outreach; Boys & Girls Club — $31,000 to expand prevention education to an additional 200 youth per year; Bradley Prevention Coalition — $31,750 to increase 24-hour access to treatment linkage and strengthen jail-based services; Foundation House Ministries — $25,750 for comprehensive wraparound support for low-income mothers and their children; and The Caring Place — $51,500 for financial assistance and intervention.
Committee minutes show members asked follow-up questions about the Dream Center proposal, and Finance Committee member Cindy Slater voiced concerns that the Dream Center still had a substantial portion of its project budget unsecured. The minutes record that the committee asked staff to seek updates from Dream Center and reserved the option to consider it in a future cycle.
Chairman Milan Blake moved the Finance Committee recommendation; Louie Alford seconded the motion before the full commission. The roll-call vote was unanimous. The Finance Committee minutes and award table were entered into the commission record as attachments, and staff was directed to carry out the grant process consistent with county procedures.
