The Columbus Common Council on April 7 approved a resolution authorizing the Columbus Redevelopment Commission to expend more than $500,000 toward construction of a new Animal Care Center located on airport property.
Redevelopment Director Heather Pope told councilors the request totals $750,000: $250,000 from the Central TIP in 2026, $250,000 from the Central TIP in 2027 and $250,000 from the Midtown TIP in 2026. Project manager Doug Sunkel displayed photos of the existing, deteriorating facility and provided an overview of the project budget and need for a new center at the airport site.
During public comment Brad Davis asked whether a $1 million match had been met; Sunkel said the match is over $800,000 at this time. Kerri Sinibaldi spoke in favor of the project and suggested using solar lighting. Councilor Elaine Hilber moved to adopt Resolution No. 2; Councilor Jay Foyst seconded. Roll call: seven in favor, zero opposed.
The resolution authorizes the Redevelopment Commission to spend the specified TIP funds. Council members and presenters indicated the project has substantial local support and that funds and matching contributions are being assembled; the meeting did not include a final construction schedule or completion date.
