The Brownsburg Police Commission accepted a sworn officer resignation and approved a recruitment plan to expand reserve staffing, commissioners said.
Commissioner Cooper read a letter from Officer Chris Nelson stating he intended to resign from the Brownsburg Police Department "effective 04/30/2026, for personal reasons" and signed "Sincerely, Chris Nelson." The commission moved, seconded and approved acceptance of the resignation by voice vote.
On recruitment, the chief reported the department received 203 pre-applications for sworn positions (8 lateral, 11 certified, 163 non-experienced). He said two candidates previously received conditional offers; Matt Birx completed conditions and has a swearing-in scheduled for April 20 at 09:00 at the Brownsburg Police Department. The chief asked for a commissioner to serve on the interview board for oral interviews set for May 5–6.
The commission also reviewed a reserve-officer recruitment plan aimed at bringing the reserve division to a sustainable number (the chief cited an example of adding four reserves to reach approximately five). A motion was made to approve the plan; commissioners approved it by voice vote.
During the support-services report, Major Barrett’s packet showed investigations closed 47 cases with four arrests in March and the department reported about 60 sworn officers currently, with the goal to reach the 62 positions allocated by town council. Commissioners discussed timing for hires after April 30 separations and budget planning to sustain staffing.
