The Brownsburg Board of Police Commissioners approved a Medal of Valor nomination for Officer Dirk Fentz on Feb. 10 for actions during a Feb. 20, 2017 armed‑robbery response, Commissioner Galloway said.
Reading the nomination, Commissioner Galloway described Fentz as locating a suspect who confronted him while armed, posing “an immediate and direct threat to the lives of other officers and civilians.” The nomination states that despite the danger, Officer Fentz “took decisive and courageous action to stop the threat,” brought the incident under control and prevented any loss of life.
President Buante called for a motion to accept the nomination; after a voice vote the motion carried. Chief Joseph Grimes addressed the commission and apologized for the delay in presenting the award, saying the department had paused recognition while prosecution and civil litigation were ongoing and that the award “should have happened” earlier. He thanked the officers who responded to the scene and said he had consulted with Officer Fentz about presenting the honor.
The commission recorded the motion and carried it by voice vote; the award will be presented in accordance with department procedures.
