The Norton Shores City Council approved a series of routine actions and two municipal contracts during its Jan. 20 meeting at the Norton Shores Branch Library Community Room.
On a roll call vote of 7-2, the council authorized the mayor to execute an agreement with Mona Shores Public Schools for summer tax collection at a fee of $3.00 per parcel; the agreement is set to expire June 30, 2027. Council Members Fisher and Olson voted against the agreement; Council Member Kasher made the motion and Council Member Jurkas supported it.
The council awarded a bid for the Norton Avenue and Padelt Street safety-improvement project to Strain Electric Company, LLC of Grand Rapids for $32,228.97. Council Member Sowa moved the award and Council Member Fisher supported the motion; the award carried unanimously.
Councils approved minutes from the Jan. 6 meeting (motion by Council Member Jurkas, seconded by Council Member Kasher) and unanimously passed the consent agenda, which included monthly department reports for police, fire, public works and administrative services; the quarterly investment update; the annual poverty exemption; the city’s FOIA policy; and authorization to solicit bids for the Avondale Park basketball court resurfacing/painting project.
During general public comment later in the meeting, Jay Kilgo (address listed as 846 Steven Street in the minutes) and Chris McGuigan (listed as Muskegon County Commissioner) spoke; the minutes do not summarize their remarks. Council Member Sowa congratulated the city on recent positive publicity, and Council Member Fox asked staff about winter salt usage and alternatives. The meeting adjourned at 6:25 p.m.
The minutes record these actions but provide limited detail about discussion on some items; the summer tax-collection agreement and the Norton Avenue award include the contract cost and the specified fee for tax collection.
