Commission funds nearly all neighborhood improvement grants; staff suggests second round

Maggie Clifton, the commission’s community engagement director, presented the 2026 neighborhood improvement grant recommendations and asked the RDC to approve nearly full funding for the 14 applications received this cycle. "Through this program, grants of $20,000 are available to neighborhood groups," Clifton said, and she described the program’s goals of building neighborhood partnerships and turning ideas into action.
Clifton told the commission the program began in 2018, has supported about 140 projects across roughly 45 neighborhoods and that roughly $1,320,000 has been invested over the program’s life. This year 14 applications requested $113,000 and staff recommended funding about $106,000. Projects ranged from tree plantings and entry beautification to a disc golf feature, a small library/public art piece and a cemetery entrance improvement.
Commissioners praised the program’s track record and discussed options for using remaining funds to open a second application round with a summer deadline so projects can still complete within the calendar year. The commission approved the staff recommendation to fund the projects, and staff will follow up on any additional application window.
