County approves sheriff’s purchase of enclosed trailer to transport range equipment

The Clay County Board authorized the sheriff’s request to buy an enclosed trailer for transporting and storing range equipment after the department was told it could no longer use its previous outdoor range.
Sheriff: “What this is is we're looking to purchase an enclosed trailer to use to transport range supplies... we would store those items in the trailer for the week that we're out there shooting,” the sheriff said, explaining the department had obtained memberships at the Glen and Ron Gun Club for range use.
The sheriff said no additional county funds were requested because projected salary savings from a soon-to-be-vacant position would cover the cost. He estimated a purchase price “just over $7,100” and discussed a planning figure up to $8,422 if fit-up costs arose. Commissioner Ebinger moved to approve the purchase; Commissioner Bair seconded and the motion carried by voice vote.
Several commissioners urged a “long-term solution” for a county range and noted a graduate capstone feasibility study had been requested to analyze building a range at the Glendon location. The authorization at the meeting covered purchase of the trailer; the board did not adopt any additional capital project at this time.
