Southern Hancock Co Com Sch Corp board approves textbooks, summer programs and community donations in unanimous votes

The board of the Southern Hancock Co Com Sch Corp met March 2, 2026, and approved a slate of routine items including donations, summer enrichment programming, an English and language arts textbook adoption, a community facility proposal and a student trip, all by unanimous 5-0 votes.
The board approved several donations presented by Sarah Gizzi, director of finance. Gifts included $200 from Wayne and Amy Hedden to NPI’s Essential Skills Program; $200 from Debra and Mark Cavin to the NPHS Athletic Department in memory of James Evans; $100 from Risin’ Dough for Community Education; $3,778.50 from Brandon and Jennifer Wilson to the NPHS Robotics Program; $400 from Angela and Mark Baker to NPHS Boys Golf; several corporate contributions toward the College & Career Fair (Koenig Equipment, Kokosing Industrial, NineStar Connect/Central Indiana Communications and Bell Professional Mortuary); and an in-kind donation of seven pallets (about 2,500 pounds) of LEGO pieces for elementary schools. The board voted to accept the donations (motion by Laura Haeberle; second by Brian McKinney).
Directors Craig Smith and Nicholas Mitchaner asked the board to approve the district's Summer Enrichment Programs and Summer School offerings for 2026. Mrs. Amanda Wooton moved to approve the recommendations; the motion passed 5-0 (second by Mr. Jon Hooker).
Mr. Smith also presented a recommended English and language arts textbook adoption. The board approved the adoption in a motion by Mrs. Laura Haeberle, seconded by Mrs. Amanda Wooton; the vote was 5-0.
Facilities staff and a representative from NPYL presented a proposal to construct/use a hitting barn for youth baseball activities. The board approved the NPYL Hitting Barn Proposal in a motion by Mr. Dan Walker, seconded by Mr. Jon Hooker; the vote was unanimous.
NPJH Principal Jessica Neill and Choir Director Bethany McDonald requested permission for NPJH band and choir students to travel to Kings Island in Mason, Ohio, on May 29, 2026, as an end-of-year reward trip. The board approved the trip (motion by Mr. Jon Hooker; second by Mr. Brian McKinney), 5-0.
Board President Dan Walker led the meeting; motions and votes on the above items were recorded in the minutes with the listed movers and seconders. The meeting adjourned following member comments.
