Valparaiso officials report $2.96M community crossings award, multi-phase pathways closures and RDC grants

Domar said the Board of Works awarded the community crossings contract to Reeth Riley for $2,960,000 (the engineering estimate was about $2.7 million). She described "Pathways package 2," a new sidewalks/trails project that will close portions of several roads (including Frober, Ransom, Vail Park and 175) in three daytime phases over about three months and that the city will give advance notice to residents and post signage.
Domar also reported the RDC approved forgiving a remaining $574,000 balance tied to a 2021 loan for a fire engine purchased by the Valparaiso Fire Territory and that the RDC approved $700,000 in challenge grants distributed by student enrollment between Valparaiso Community Schools and the Porter County Career and Technical Academy for Chromebooks, iPad carts, STEM supplies and a virtual welder.
She added that land was deeded to the city for the Barrel District Trail (from Urschel to the city) and that another parcel was deeded to the RDC to assemble a larger development tract near the Eastgate Silhavy roundabout.
Domar said an East Side Master Plan open house on March 31 drew hundreds of survey responses; the stakeholder group will reconvene to select a preferred option and next steps.
The council did not take formal votes on these liaison reports during the meeting; they were presented as informational updates.
