Greenride Bikeshare reports ridership gains and conversion to electric-assist; operator outlines operational challenges

CCRPC staff and Bolt Mobility briefed the Transportation Advisory Committee on Oct. 5 about the expansion of Greenride Bikeshare and the system’s conversion to electric-assist bikes.
Bryan Davis (CCRPC) reviewed system history, partners, funding and the 2018 launch; Mark Johnson (Bolt Mobility) presented usage data showing strong summer ridership and increased trips associated with college and university semesters. Johnson said the system operates year-round but that the fleet is likely to be reduced during winter months and that in severe snow events Bolt pulls bikes, clears stations, and redeploys when conditions improve.
Members asked whether data can distinguish recreational trips from transportation trips; staff said hub usage and time-of-day/location data can be used as proxies. Johnson noted labor shortages and supply-chain issues as constraints on complete system deployment and said Bolt currently funds operations but will seek local station sponsors to expand coverage. The presentation also covered operational details such as on-app battery-charge displays and field battery-swapping procedures.
Committee members suggested adding stations near employment hubs and college campuses; staff said they will consider boundary adjustments and additional racks. The update did not include a final operating-budget forecast; the operator stated satisfaction with system usage but did not provide profitability figures at the meeting.
