The Rowlett City Council unanimously voted April 7 to rename the Rowlett Nature Trail the Lonnie Cornwell Memorial Nature Trail, honoring Cornwell’s decades of volunteer service to parks and tree-planting efforts.
Parks director Ryan Mullins summarized Cornwell’s service record — 34 years of residency, 14 years on the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board, leadership with Keep Rowlett Beautiful and volunteer organization work after the 2015 tornado. Mullins said the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board reviewed the naming request and unanimously recommended approval.
Council member Debbie Bobbitt, who helped bring the nomination forward, described Cornwell as “a very passionate person for trees” who led replanting and conservation projects. Mullins said staff will work with the family on interpretive signage at the trail entrance and the council authorized the interim city manager to purchase signage and execute necessary documents.
The council also noted family members were present at the meeting for the vote. The measure carried on a unanimous vote; staff said they will coordinate a dedication event and the design of a readable interpretive sign with the family.
