Appointments committee forwards Paulette Burns confirmation, flags oath deadline and outreach gaps

The Appointments Committee of the Gardner City Council voted to recommend to the full council the confirmation of Paulette Burns as a member of the Board of Assessors for a term expiring Aug. 21, 2028. The committee’s chair made the motion and it was seconded; the committee voted in favor.
The committee reviewed a list of appointees confirmed in council, including Greg Dumas (Conservation Commission), Melissa McDonald (Building Commissioner), Linda Rice (Historical Commission) and several members of the Council on Aging. Clerk staff reported that Melissa McDonald completed her onboarding and that staff will contact other appointees to arrange attendance at future meetings.
Committee members and the clerk discussed gaps in contact information for some volunteers and the 90-day requirement for newly confirmed appointees to take the oath. Clerk staff said they have partial email and phone contact lists and will use whatever method best reaches each appointee. The chair said the mayor provided an updated template that displays expiration dates so the committee can track 90-day windows and avoid missed deadlines.
The committee agreed to keep outstanding appointment items on the agenda as reminders and to work on improved outreach ahead of the next round of interviews scheduled for May 12. The committee adjourned after completing its business.
