Britney Montgomery, the city’s ADA advocate and an official member of the Disability Advisory Committee, told the committee on April 21 that the advisory body has not yet filed its annual March 15 report because of leadership turnover and personnel changes.
Montgomery said the committee changed its chair twice in the last year, that the current chair is out on medical leave, and that a co-chair is presently running meetings. She said the committee will hold its first official meeting soon and will submit a full report with recommendations to the Common Council after that meeting.
Councilmembers thanked Montgomery for her work and said they would help convene meetings and consider charter-language changes to strengthen the committee’s ability to meet and produce recommendations. One councilmember noted that members living with disabilities may face additional barriers to consistent attendance and suggested language changes to preserve committee autonomy while allowing the ADA advocate to call meetings when necessary.
Action: the committee moved to table further action on the Disability Advisory Committee report; the motion was seconded.
