Principals report enrollment numbers, testing schedule and K-2 curriculum switch

At the meeting staff reported district enrollment figures and academic and behavioral updates from school principals.

The district reported a total enrollment of 501 students as of April 20, with an elementary principal reporting pre-K at 19 and kindergarten-through-sixth grade enrollment at 294; high-school enrollment was reported at 207. The principals noted some grade-level declines, particularly in second and seventh grades, and said they plan registration drives and retention planning over the summer.

Testing and curriculum: Principals reviewed ATLAS testing schedules for various grades (including upcoming grades and makeup tests) and said ATLAS ELA scoring is partly hand-scored with results trickling in. The elementary principal said the district will switch kindergarten through second grade to UFLA (noted in the transcript as "UFLA" or "UFLY") ELA curriculum as part of a Department of Education research study that will provide training and materials; third grade will move to the Wonders curriculum used in other grades.

Behavior and discipline: The elementary principal reported 39 referrals in the past month, with disrespect, defiance and physical aggression as the leading causes; in 20 cases the district assigned in-school suspension (ISS) and no out-of-school suspensions (OSS), with loss of privileges used in seven cases.

Principals also summarized end-of-year events including graduation and regional sports tournaments. Board members asked follow-up questions about incoming kindergarten numbers and registration efforts.

Staff did not propose policy changes at this meeting; the report was presented for board information and planning.
