Senator Lawrence introduces resolution to allow live video of Senate floor starting Jan. 1, 2027

Senator Lawrence introduced a resolution to allow video to accompany the audio live stream of Senate floor proceedings starting Jan. 1, 2027, and included language to make clear that brief audio or video interruptions would not halt Senate business.

"Currently they can listen in, but there have been some comments that they don't know who's speaking and they would be better, able to follow along if they could actually see who might be up on the floor," Senator Lawrence said while explaining the proposal. He said provisions would be included to address interruptions so that livestream glitches would not force the Senate to suspend proceedings.

Senator from Clay told colleagues he supported the idea and urged consideration of the resolution. "I can't tell you the number of times that I have received text messages that I have seen a report in the media that has confused which senator was speaking," the senator from Clay said, adding that allowing video would help constituents follow debates and reduce confusion.

Supporters said the cost would be modest and that the change would mirror practices in other legislative bodies. They also said the Senate's traditions and rules could be preserved while improving public access to who is speaking. No roll‑call vote or formal adoption of the rule change was recorded during this session; Senator Lawrence asked colleagues to review the proposal and consider the implementation steps required to make live video available to the public.
