Summary
Fire Chief Richard Edwards updated commissioners on wildfire preparedness: distribution of homeowner guidance, availability of defensible‑space inspectors, end of open burning in unincorporated Washoe County on April 30, final spring green‑waste collections and an upcoming wildfire preparedness workshop on Thursday at South Valleys Library.
Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue Chief Richard Edwards told the Washoe County Board of County Commissioners on April 28 that the district is stepping up wildfire education, inspections and training ahead of fire season.
Edwards described a one‑page community guidance sheet that clarifies noxious weeds, hazardous fuels and the code authorities that apply to defensible‑space enforcement. He said the district will make defensible‑space inspectors available to visit parcels and advise homeowners on parcel‑specific mitigation steps.
“Make your home survive through a wildfire,” Edwards said, stressing that home hardening and fuel reduction are the best defenses. He reminded residents that open burning in unincorporated Washoe County ends Thursday, April 30, and noted two final spring green‑waste collection events: May 2 at Silver Lake Station (11,525 Red Rock Road) and May 3 at the Nevada Division of Forestry Station in Washoe Valley, both 9 a.m.–4 p.m. The green‑waste collections accept natural vegetation only; items may not be presented in garbage bags.
Edwards also invited residents to a wildfire preparedness and homeowner education workshop at the South Valleys Library Thursday at 6 p.m., organized with Fire Adapted Nevada and regional partners. He said firefighters are conducting annual wildfire training now and will participate in a multi‑agency exercise later in May.
Commissioners thanked the district for materials and encouraged public outreach. The presentation required no immediate board action but informed the commission’s public‑safety work program for the season.
