County approves TxDOT STEP grants and reallocates $38,000 to Meals on Wheels and senior programs

County staff briefed the Commissioners Court on annual TxDOT enforcement grants and an internal reallocation of a previously awarded FY22 grant, and the court approved the items.
Brooke, a county staff member handling grants, said the county will apply for the TxDOT STEP comprehensive grant (for traffic safety enforcement) and a commercial motor vehicle enforcement grant. The county’s local match requirements for the current cycle are $9,549.71 for the comprehensive STEP grant and $5,764.51 for the commercial motor vehicle enforcement grant. "Basically, what this one does is this program provides us funds for officers to be able to monitor and enforce regulations specific to, like, DUIs, seat belt violations, crashes," Brooke said.
Brooke also described adjusting the scope of a previously awarded FY22 grant and moving $38,000 in programming funds into three projects: $15,000 to support Meals on Wheels (structured as $3,000 per year for five years), $20,000 for senior fitness and programming (a $4,000 per-year commitment for five years) and $3,000 to support senior transportation assistance (a $1,000 commitment for three years) to supplement Colorado Valley Transit service.
Brooke said the grant award was flexible and that the county will coordinate with Meals on Wheels and Colorado Valley Transit on implementation; legal will handle program details. The court carried the items.
