"When we had to do a street intersection outage it cost the city about $100,000 for 2 hours," he said as an illustration of the scale and complexity of transmission work.
Recreation Services Director Greg Stevens briefed council on softball‑related priorities raised by parents and the Beach & Park District: potential redeployment of existing athletic facilities, lighting upgrades, portable batting cages, restroom trailers, tree trimming and additional bleachers and shade. Staff said they will analyze scheduling, quantity and equity of fields and present recommendations at a May workshop that could include short‑term solutions.
Councilmembers expressed mixed views: some urged a comprehensive park master plan before committing to major projects; others supported immediate low‑cost fixes and moving forward with planning-level work that would let the city evaluate FPL options early because relocation can be time‑consuming. The council provided direction to begin discussions with FPL and to proceed with evaluation and design work (planning level) for Singing Pines and the tennis center while prioritizing low‑cost, high‑impact short‑term repairs.
What happens next: staff will compile requested data, return with detailed options at a May workshop, and begin coordination with FPL to determine feasibility and cost estimates for transmission relocation.
