A county motor-vehicle agent warned San Patricio County residents on Dec. 1 that the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has instituted an immediate requirement for a valid, unexpired photo ID before clerks can complete registration renewals or title transactions.
"Two weeks ago, they rolled out a new requirement that's effective immediately where we're gonna be required to ask for a valid unexpired photo ID whenever we sell a renewal or do a title change," the agent told commissioners. The office will accept unexpired U.S. passports and certain foreign passports presented with a current permanent-resident card or unexpired immigrant visa, the agent said.
The agent said the DMV is also deploying a system update that will require staff to enter a driver's-license number and will prevent transactions if the ID does not validate. "If it's not valid, we won't be able to sell the registration or do the title work," the agent said, and urged residents to renew expired licenses before coming to the office. The office said it will post notices on windows at main offices and substations.
The announcement applies to county motor-vehicle agents and, the speaker said, will affect dealerships as well. No county-level policy was proposed at the meeting; commissioners only received the briefing and asked staff to ensure public notices are posted.
The agent invited residents with questions to call the office for guidance on acceptable documents and the new procedures.
