Awareness of advanced nuclear rises in Alaska; microreactor descriptions increase measured support

Awareness of so‑called advanced nuclear and microreactor technologies in Alaska rose over the last two survey waves, presenters told the House Resources Committee on April 24 — and measured support increased when respondents were given a short, neutral description of the technology.
"In 2023 only about a quarter of respondents had heard of these (advanced reactors); by our most recent survey that went up to about 40%," Gwen Holdman, chief scientist at the Alaska Center for Energy and Power, said. Holdman added that the increase in awareness does not automatically mean permanent support, but it makes opinions more malleable when respondents receive information.
Holdman described microreactors as smaller, moduleized reactors that can be delivered to a site in a container and swapped out for refueling. "One example would be the project that's been proposed at Eielson Air Force Base," she said, adding that a typical operational concept presented was refueling or module replacement about every 7 to 10 years. The presenters said some timelines for deployments (e.g., the Eielson plan) are likely to slip.
The presenters also noted the survey included a targeted sample of attendees at the Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference; those respondents showed higher familiarity and stronger support than the general public, illustrating how information and sector engagement correlate with favorability.
Holdman described planned educational opportunities for utilities and legislators: ACEP is organizing utility visits to the Idaho National Laboratory and tentatively planning a separate tour for legislators to see advanced-reactor facilities. Committee members requested follow-up briefings and emphasized the importance of community engagement and clear, locally focused information if microreactor projects advance.
