Assembly certifies April elections, reports 28.4% turnout, swears in new members and elects new leadership

The Anchorage Assembly unanimously certified the April 7, 2026 municipal election and a subsequent Assembly District 4 recount on April 24, approving clerk memoranda AM283‑2026 and AM313‑2026.
Election Administrator Liz Edwards told the Assembly turnout was 28.4% (66,848 ballots cast of 235,439 registered voters). The office mailed 201,524 ballot packages; 71% of returned ballots were placed in secure drop boxes, 23% returned via USPS, and 5% were cast in person at vote centers. The election commission rejected 815 ballots at the April 23 canvass; the largest categories were no signature match (450) and postmark too late (197). The District 4 automatic recount was conducted April 24; the recount retabulated electronic images, produced no challenges and matched the unofficial results.
After certification the Assembly administered oaths to newly certified members. During the organizational portion of the meeting the clerk called nominations for chair and vice chair. Anna Brawley was nominated and elected chair by acclamation; the Assembly then conducted a secret ballot for vice chair. Daniel Voland was elected vice chair 8–4 over Zach Johnson.
Departing and returning members received recognition: chair Constance invited remarks and several members read legislative citations honoring outgoing members’ service. The Assembly adjourned after completing organizational business.
