Teacher urges township to do more to include Jewish holidays in town celebrations

Gail Donner, a retired public school teacher and Springfield resident, used the township's public-comment period to urge the committee to give the Jewish community the same visibility and access enjoyed by Christian groups during town celebrations.

"What do you do for the Jewish residents?" Donner asked, citing the absence of a regular menorah display and saying that Chabad has had to arrange separate events. She asked the committee to consider a menorah or a dreidel on Town Hall grounds so Jewish children could feel included in holiday activities.

Mayor Laufer responded that the township partners with Chabad (providing snow removal, DPW support, and police details at no cost) and that the committee is "looking at further investing in Hanukkah activities" to ensure inclusivity. He advised Donner to raise school-use questions with the Board of Education or at a board meeting; he said the township would help connect her with the board.

Committee members recalled that, in the past, one synagogue did not want a public menorah displayed and that led to removal of both a manger and a menorah in a prior season. Committee members said they would explore partnerships with houses of worship and the board to expand holiday recognition.

Why it matters: Public displays and the use of municipal space for religiously affiliated holiday observances can raise concerns about equal treatment and inclusivity. Donner asked for explicit action to ensure Jewish residents see the town recognize their holidays as visibly as others.
