District tech update: simulation upgrades, device refreshes and cautious use of AI in classrooms

The aviation program received upgraded flight-simulation computers through a grant secured by Tim Whaler, and first-grade iPads were refreshed so older devices can be moved to kindergarten, stretching the device budget. Leah said the district uses a structured replacement plan (laptops on a six-year cycle; desktops on an eight-year cycle) and will have students in grades 6–12 return Chromebooks at the end of the school year for summer maintenance.
On AI, Leah said licensed staff are using tools like ChatGPT, Google AI and MagicSchool AI to help create lesson plans and materials. "AI is really being used as a support tool for teachers, not a replacement for instruction at this time," Leah said.
Security and privacy practices described include use of Lightspeed filters, Google Workspace security features, FortiGate firewall, Clever, and Apple School Manager. Staff said these systems and regular reviews help the district identify and address potential risks to student and staff data.
Staff plans include an efficient pickup/distribution process for devices in the fall and continuing to prioritize technology that supports instruction while protecting data.
