Mark Spagnoli, the town's director of engineering, said Morrisville will implement short-term traffic detours starting April 1 for utility work at Carolina Street and Town Hall Drive.
“We have some traffic detours coming up in the next few days starting April 1 because of utility work that's gonna be happening at Carolina Street and Town Hall Drive,” Spagnoli said, describing a temporary pattern that will reroute northbound traffic into the southbound lane near the fire station and reduce the roadway to a single northbound lane until drivers pass the Carolina Street traffic circle.
The detour is scheduled to run April 1–3, Spagnoli said, with the road expected to reopen on April 4. He added that the right-hand slip lane that leads into the Carolina traffic circle "that's gonna be closed indefinitely," meaning drivers will have to continue straight and make a right through the circle rather than use the slip lane once the town center is completed.
Spagnoli asked drivers to "take it slow, slow down, respect the traffic control devices, and be careful" while the work is under way.
In related updates, Spagnoli said the temporary library parking lot at Foxglove Drive and Carolina Street is now open and that patrons should park there and follow posted signage to reach the library entrance.
He also announced a longer closure of Foxglove Drive: "From the parking entrance to the temporary parking lot for the library to Jeremiah Street where the stop sign is, that section of Foxglove Drive will be closed starting on Monday, April 6 for a year and a half period to allow for the contractors to work seamlessly on the multifamily housing and parking deck project." The closure is intended to provide continuous work access for contractors building the town-center housing and parking deck.
The measures include both temporary traffic control for utility work and a permanent change to roadway access near the Carolina traffic circle tied to the town center project. Spagnoli closed the briefing by thanking listeners and saying he looks forward to providing another update.
