At its March 2 meeting, the Washington County Board of Commissioners heard a presentation on the county’s contribution to a nationwide semiquincentennial quilt project organized by 'Washington Unite' and unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the collaboration.
Chris Barber, chair of the county’s 250th Celebration Committee, briefed the Board on the initiative: organizers asked each of the 31 Washington Counties in the United States to create a red, white and blue quilt square representing something meaningful to the county. Jill Manring showed the square the Washington County team produced — a lighthouse motif — and said the squares "will be collected in Arkansas and the quilt assembled, then it will travel from Washington County to Washington County across the U.S." 4‑H Agent Sonoma Jefferson said local 4‑H members helped on the project; 4‑H student Josiah Fleshma described the experience as enjoyable.
Commissioner Carol V. Phelps moved to approve RESO 2026-006 recognizing the semiquincentennial collaboration; Commissioner Ann C. Keyes seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The resolution recognizes the county’s participation and supports related celebratory activities. The 250th committee will continue coordinating the square’s submission and related outreach.
