Betsy Gann, the district director of curriculum and gifted services, asked the Bellbrook‑Sugarcreek Board of Education on April 23 to support a teacher‑led development pilot for high‑school Spanish and French curriculum.
Gann said the district last adopted world language materials in 2018 and must reflect revised Ohio standards and ACTFL proficiency targets. Rather than purchasing a vendor package, the proposed approach pays stipends to teacher teams to develop curriculum maps, performance‑based assessments and instructional materials designed for local students. "We are proposing or looking for support for developing curriculum by the teachers for the students in the fashion of a 1 year pilot," Gann said.
She estimated initial digital content, a common online tool (Edpuzzle) and teacher stipends at about $16,350 and told trustees Title IIA federal funds could cover that cost in FY26. Gann said the work would be documented in the district's CHALK curriculum‑mapping software and stored in Google Classroom; the fall would be used to pilot the first‑level units, with a spring reflection and a decision about broader adoption next year.
Board members asked whether the model could scale to social studies or ELA and how the district would measure need and student outcomes. Gann said the district implementation team reviewed the plan and scored it "4 out of 5" on alignment and that student outcome tracking would begin after the pilot once materials and assessments are implemented.
No purchase or formal adoption was requested at the meeting; this was an information presentation and first‑step request for support and questions from the board.
