Gary Community Schools details 'Summer Passport' and expanded summer offerings; registration available at garyschools.org

Dr. Cynthia Treadwell, the Gary Community School Corporation's chief academic officer, laid out the district's summer programming on WLTH, emphasizing continuity of learning and enrichment for rising scholars.
"Summer school starts on Monday," Treadwell said, noting programs at Glen Park Academy (for rising kindergarten through sixth grade) and Westside Leadership Academy (for ninth through 12th graders who need additional coursework). She said the Gary Area Career Center is hosting trade programming so students can continue accruing industry hours.
Treadwell described a new multi-day "Summer Passport" program for rising kindergarten through sixth grade at Glen Park Academy that runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., provides lunch and transportation, and offers enrichment including arts, hands-on learning and sports. She said the district expects parents to register via the district website and that registration was closing soon.
The district is also offering week-long STEM activities for middle-school students in partnership with GEAR UP ("about 40 students at each school"), and an Urban League Learning Lab for rising kindergarten through fifth-graders at Glen Park Academy. For high-school students, Summer Passport programming at the high school will focus on Gary Community School Corporation students and include options such as studio recording, art, dance and sports camps.
Dr. Yvonne Stokes said the program resulted from collaboration with Mayor Melton and the school board, and credited Chelsea Whittington with the program name. Treadwell said the district intends the summer offerings to prevent summer learning loss and to build relationships between students, families and staff; several programs include transportation and meals to reduce barriers to participation.
The broadcast did not announce enrollment caps for every program; where a number was given, Treadwell said approximately 40 students were expected for each middle-school STEM week.
