City to seek public input on new playground and splash-pad designs

City parks staff said the city has invited firms to develop designs for a new playground and splash pad and will seek public comment before finalizing a design for grants and construction.
Richard Blankenship, Parks and Recreation director, said the city provided design criteria to five vendors — themes included river-, environmental- or pelican-related concepts tied to local character. “We gave them some criteria. It could be river related. It could be environmentally related. It could pelican related,” Blankenship said.
Blankenship said designs were due last Friday and staff will present options to the public (either at the committee or at schools) to gather input, then return options to the advisory committee for direction before forwarding a chosen design to city council and to grant partners. He said the goal is to have an agreed design by Sept. 1 so it can be included in grant applications.
No formal decision was made at the advisory committee meeting; staff sought committee feedback and indicated there may be a special meeting in May for design review.
